Welcome to the online home of Steve McIntyre-Smith.

Working with public accounting firms is not a big part of what we do... it's the ONLY thing we do.

For over 30 Years, Steve McIntyre-Smith has worked in and around the public accounting profession. Steve has been in your shoes, as a staff member of an accounting firm and ultimately partner and a sole practitioner. He has started, bought, built and sold several practices in the early part of his career, and during this journey made his fair share of mistakes! However, he learned from each one, and refined many techniques that helped him become highly successful while in public accounting himself.

He established his 'boutique' practice, serving only public accounting firms, in May 2003, to share his ideas and experiences.

While we offer a comprehensive range of services to the public accounting profession, our two most popular services we offer are our Recruiting_Services and our Merger_&_Acquisition_Services. Each year we publish a very popular, free resource for employers in public accounting - the 'Ontario Public Accounting Salary Survey' - used by many firms in Ontario to set salary levels for the coming year. Feel free to download a copy of this for yourself, by clicking here.

McIntyre-Smith is acknowledged by many as a leading expert in public accounting growth, recruiting, mergers and acquisitions, and in 2004 he was approached by the Canadian Institute of Chartered Accountants to produce a series of checklists for practitioners to help them with their own succession planning.

The result was 'The Succession Planning Toolkit' ISBN # 1-55385-165-X, published in 2005 by the CICA.

Since June 2002 Steve has been a resident columnist for 'The Bottom Line' - Canada's leading newspaper to the accounting & finance profession. His library of published articles is available here.

Steve is a member of the faculty of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Ontario, and many other provincial CA Institutes, as he teaches PD courses for them from coast to coast. He is a member of Mensa (the high IQ society) and the Institute of Direct Marketing.

Steve is also a highly sought-after, and entertaining, public speaker, the author of several best-selling books and creator of a growing library of training DVDs for public accounting firms.

His clients include large independent firms, professional bodies, mid-tier firms and sole practitioners around the world.

Please use the black navigation bars at the top of each page on this site to navigate to the practice areas of interest to you, and please don't forget to sign up for our free monthly newsletter, LEDGER, while you're with us.

'Towards_Awesome_Client_Service' was launched to critical acclaim in 2004 and is used by many accounting firms around the world to help them get closer to their clients, differentiate themselves from the competition and create new opportunities for firms to work with new and existing clients, generating new fee income as a direct result.

2007 saw the creation of Steve's first DVD 'Best Practices For Running Your Accounting Practice' - a seminar he held for accountants, sponsored by CCH and Scotiabank, and captured on film. This remains our best-selling DVD to date, but we have since created a whole library of new titles, which continues to grow each year as new DVDs are added.

We have a selection of free video clips taken from our DVD lineup at our DVD store which you can find by clicking here.

In 2010 we introduced 'Partner_Bootcamp' to prepare soon-to-be partners for their new role and responsibilities as they either become partners in their present firms, or break away to start their own.

The next 'big thing' Steve is working on is the launch of a national network of independent accounting firms in Canada. The purpose of which is to create a network of firms who all want to provide value-added services to clients, and particularly 'what-if' analysis and planning services to help clients make better business decisions. The intent is to show the nation a better choice of accounting firm, accountants who want to help their clients achieve better results in the future, rather than those who simply want to report how they did last year. It's called 'The Business Mentors Network', and it's coming to your city soon!

The key services we provide include:

  • Recruiting staff for your firm
  • Finding practices to buy or merge with
  • Helping practitioners devise an exit strategy and sell or merge their firm
  • Strategic planning
  • Adding 'Value-Added' services to your service mix
  • Improving practice profitability
  • Marketing help
  • Speaking at partner retreats, conventions and conferences
  • Offering Professional Development courses, mostly through the Institute of Chartered Accountants

As an author, Steve got started in the on-line publishing field in the late 1990s - starting a marketing and practice management newsletter for the public accounting profession. This grew into LEDGER, which is now serves an opt-in subscriber base of thousands of accounting professionals all over the world.

The next step was a series of business e-books exclusively for the public accounting market, later updated to 'pdf' format.

Indeed, many of his ebooks are still selling well today, and we are in the process of updating several of these to include new chapters on social media and the public accounting scene, the effect of web-based video, Facebook, Linked-In and more. The next phase for these products is the conversion into files for downloading by 'Kindle' users via Amazon.com.

In 2005, Steve moved from self-publishing, to producing a 'real' book, printed and bound, with a proper cover!

This was a text book on Succession Planning for Chartered Accountants, 'The Succession Planning Toolkit', mentioned above.

This was a great experience in working with editors, designers and publishers who worked as a team to ensure we got a great product out to the marketplace.

Steve still gets calls from Accountants who use this book as their guide to getting a deal done to sell their practice.

While Steve still has a few more business books in him, his future writing will be mostly fiction, and his first, eagerly anticipated release 'A Killing On The Exchange' will soon be out.

"I liked authors such as John Grisham, David Baldacci and Stephen Frey, but there was not a single piece of fiction that I could find that focused on the accounting profession - it was always Lawyers or Investment Bankers.

I have always written, and so I thought 'wouldn't it be fun to create a series of novels where the Accountants are the central characters?' and, indeed, it was" Steve said to our webmaster.

Find out what happens to Andy Bates, CPA, Giles MacNaire, FCA and others as their day-to-day work in public accounting takes them in unusual and dangerous directions!

Steve continues to work as a consultant to the accounting profession as his 'day job' as this is often a source for story lines for his books!

Liquid Assets

Andy Bates, CPA, returns three years after the X-3-C scare to help solve another mystery. When the US water supply is suddenly predicted to expire twenty years sooner than thought, the nation plans a massive desalinization project.

Who murdered a US Senator and his Ontario-based Accountant, and why, and how is it linked to events in New Orleans? New US President, Sylvia Chan and Canadian Prime Minister, Sheila McManus butt heads over a covert dredging of Lake Superior, but will they go to war over water?

Elsewhere, a rogue military unit has other plans and turns an envious eye towards Canada’s copious fresh water supply.

Will Andrew Bates’ client be the winner of the desalinization project, or will it be their bitter rivals? And who would resort to bribery and murder, in order to win the contract?

The kidnapping and torture of a Government official leads the FBI to a shocking plan, and Bates has no option but to go undercover to get to the truth.

Coming in 2012.
